People ask me all the time, “How do you stay so connected?” or “What’s your secret?” They want to know why I can be calm when everything’s falling apart or how I hold space for others without flinching. Well, I’m going to tell you. And no, it’s not some mystical superpower, and it’s not because I’m some kind of Zen monk (though I did hang out in a Thai monastery once…but more on that later).
Here’s the truth: I live from the heart. Sounds simple, right? It is. But like all simple things, it takes practice, awareness, and a whole lot of letting go of the mental clutter. People also ask me how I got over my deep pain so quickly. Last year, I went through a period of deep grief. It wasn’t easy; I felt the weight of it fully. But living from the heart and allowing others to help me brought me through it faster than I expected. Even in my darkest moments, I was able to reconnect, find the light, and move forward.
But I’m not here to tell you to become a monk or spend your days meditating on a mountain (though, I’m not going to lie, that sounds pretty good). I’m here to show you how you can live from the heart in a world that’s constantly pulling you in a thousand directions. And guess what? It doesn’t require some grand overhaul of your life. It’s about small, meaningful actions that reconnect you to yourself, to others, and life.
My Day, My Heart, and How It Works
Let me walk you through a typical day where I try my best to stay heart-centred. It starts with something simple: my morning cacao ceremony. I sit down on the lounge, cacao in hand, staring out my window with a view of nature. No phone. No distractions. Just me and that cup of cacao. I don’t know what Alan Watts would say about sipping cacao, but I imagine it’d be something like, “Just drink it. Don’t think about drinking it, just drink it.”
That’s the point. Presence. It’s about being right here, right now. I let myself get lost in the moment and soak in the gratitude. This is my time to breathe, to reconnect, to feel the joy of being alive. And from that place of stillness, I move into the rest of my day.
Of course, I do my Vedic meditation every morning and night – it’s non-negotiable. As Thom Knowles would say, “It’s not about escaping life, it’s about transcending the noise.” And trust me, there’s a lot of noise out there. But when I come out of meditation, I feel more connected, not just to myself, but to my family and everyone I bump into throughout the day. It’s like my heart’s been reset.
Oh, and there’s something else I do each morning: I send a love message to my soul lover. It could be a quick text or a video, but it’s always a small expression of love to remind us both of what’s important. And sometimes, I ask her, “How’s your heart this morning?” It’s a reminder for her to check in, to be present with herself, and for us to stay connected from the heart. It doesn’t happen every day, but when it does, it’s like a little grounding moment for both of us.
Breathing Into It (Literally)
Here’s something practical for you: heart coherence breathing. You’ve probably heard me mention it. It’s the simplest way to check in with yourself when life feels like it’s getting away from you. Five seconds in, five seconds out. Sounds too basic? Maybe. But it works. It’s about slowing down the breath and regulating your system when stress hits, which, let’s be honest, it will. Often.
When I notice myself breathing shallow or chesty (you know that kind of breath you take when the world’s getting on your nerves?), I know it’s time to reset. I sit down, breathe into my heart, and bring myself back to the moment. Alan Watts called life a dance. Well, sometimes, you’ve gotta stop, catch your breath, and re-sync with the rhythm.
Nature, Barefoot, and Wide-Eyed
One of my favourite ways to reconnect with my heart is by walking my Bulldog, Darcy. I mostly leave the electronics behind, but there are days when I’ll pop in a podcast if I feel like it. The key is to stay aware. When I’m present, I go barefoot to ground myself and connect with the earth. Feeling the earth beneath your feet reminds you that you’re part of something bigger. No distractions, just me and the world. Alan Watts would say I’m practising cosmic consciousness. And yeah, it feels like that. Not full-blown enlightenment, but a nice reminder that there’s more to life than the noise we usually get caught up in.
I also make sure that once a month, I step out of the routine and try something new – whether it’s pickleball, salsa dancing, or simply reconnecting with old friends. These new experiences keep my heart open to the unexpected, and honestly, they remind me that life is about more than just work and routine. I’ll also do something creative, like building something new or learning a new skill – maybe even surfing. Creativity keeps my heart energised.
A Deeper Connection: Yearly Rituals
It’s not just the daily practices that keep me connected. Every year, I commit to a full immersion retreat. It could be meditation, breathwork, or even camping. Whatever it is, it’s time spent away from the regular grind, going deep into nature or self-reflection to realign with my heart’s truth.
These yearly practices remind me that living from the heart isn’t a one-time decision. It’s a commitment. A journey.
What’s the Point of All This?
Living from the heart isn’t about some spiritual superiority or being a “better” person. It’s about finding what’s real. Ram Dass said, “We’re all just walking each other home.” And that’s the key. When I connect with others, I don’t try to impress them with my day or dump my problems. I listen. I make space for them to be themselves. That’s living from the heart.
So, if you’re wondering where to start, don’t overcomplicate it. Begin with heart coherence breathing, a daily moment of stillness, a gratitude journal or just a walk in nature – barefoot, if you’re feeling it. The important thing is to show up for yourself, let go of the pressure to be perfect and trust that love and presence will guide you through.
